TERREMOTO E MAREMOTO IN THAILANDIA, SRi LANKA PROBABILE ANCHE MALDIVE
Re: TERREMOTO E MAREMOTO IN THAILANDIA, SRi LANKA PROBABILE ANCHE MALDIVE

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Two-thirds of the Maldives capital has been flooded after a series of tsunami waves triggered by an earthquake swamped the low-lying Indian Ocean archipelago, the chief government spokesman has said.
"The damage is considerable," Ahmed Shaheed told Reuters. "The island is only about three feet (one metre) above sea level and a wave of water four feet (1.3 metres) high swept over us."
Male, which is 2 km (1.25 miles) long and 800 metres (half a mile) wide and home to 75,000 people, is bursting at the seams.
The streets of white-washed houses are heavily built up, living conditions often cramped and areas of communal open space sparse for the country's 300,000 people.
"It is a very bad situation. It is terrible," Shaheed told Reuters by telephone after a tour of the capital on Sunday.
He said the international airport was unusable, adding that President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom would shortly declare a national disaster and appeal for international assistance.
In a recent interview with Reuters, Gayoom said rising sea levels posed a great threat to the archipelago, a favourite tourist destination.
"We still face the threat of sea level rise," he said. "There is encroachment of the sea on many islands, there is erosion of our beaches."
"As you know it is the peak tourist season," Shaheed said.
"We are trying to get reports from those areas. The whole of the Maldives is a tourist area so we are just hoping and praying."

Un turista italiano ferito

MALE, Dec 26 (HNS) -- Maldives on Sunday morning was flooded after experiencing the affects of a powerful earthquake which rocked Indonesia’s northernmost province of Aceh.
The National Meteorological Department said that the affects were felt in Male and nearby areas around 6:30am local time. Witnesses said that tremors were felt for around two minutes. Residents in the capital said that they woke up when their beds started to shake.
There has been one reported death with more reports of injuries coming in.
A British tourist at White Sand Beach resort island in South Ari atoll, which is adjacent to Male atoll, died from a heart attack possibly after seeing the huge wave coming to the island, an official said.
Some 285 tourists were on the beach at the time, and an Italian tourist, who was washed ashore while sleeping in a water bungalow, was seriously injured. The identities of the British and Italian tourist were not revealed.
All the 50 water bungalows built in the island’s lagoon have been washed away, an official from the resort said.
Other resorts are also reporting the destruction of water bungalows and jetties while inhabited islands are reporting the damaging of jetties, and flooding of homes and houses.
Lifeguard Mohamed Rasheed stationed at the Artificial Beach on the eastern coast of Male said it was as if the whole sea heaved in a huge swell before striking the outer reef of Male and spilling onshore.
In Male, parts of the inner breakwater had collapsed in front of the President’s Office while a Coast Guard speedboat lay on the street in front of the President’s Office.
At the commercial harbor, an eyewitness said that he saw the sea suddenly swelling up and that before he had time to run inland, he saw dhonies and speedboats coming towards him as the water spilled over the seawall.
“The water was up to my neck. I saw a woman and child nearby but I don’t know what became of them,” the man said.
Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Male said that casualties are being brought to the hospital.
The tidal wave struck Male at around 9:20am local time according to the Meteorology Department.
The government has asked vessels not to travel and also has asked people not to stay near the sea, warning there could be another huge tidal wave in the next 12 hours.
“Some islands are reporting that tidal waves are still flooding in the outer atolls,” state TV Television Maldives said.
“This is the first time Maldives has recorded such an onslaught from freak waves,” the National Meteorological Department said in a press release.
CNN said that the earthquake measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale was the most powerful earthquake to have struck in the past 50 years.
Department of Meteorology’s Deputy Director Abdulla Algeen said that people are reporting the tremors to the department.
The U.S. Geological Survey said that the temblor was centered 160 kilometers off the west coast of Sumatra.
The government has said that it may take a week for the capital and the islands to be cleared up from the floods.
Public Health officials said that they fear an outbreak of epidemic due to the flooding.
Officials also said that they may need urgent medical and food assistance from the international community.
Maldives experienced a tidal wave attack in 1987 but it was blamed on freak weather.

Almeno tre bambini deceduti
Tagliati i collegamenti tra Male e le altre isole.
Le isole più colpite sarebbero quelle a nord della capitale.

(CNN) -- Massive waves triggered by a powerful earthquake temporarily covered several inhabited islands in the low-lying Maldives archipelago, south of India, according to the country's Foreign Minister Fathulla Jamil.
At least three children were killed in the high waters on an island north of the capital, Male. However an accurate death toll has not been assessed because communications to the outlying islands have been cut off, Jamil said.
A retaining wall in Male collapsed in the massive waves, causing damage to high-rise buildings. Tourists are stranded on the beach with no food because the resort hotels -- which normally rely on generators -- have no power.
The Maldives consists of nearly 2,000 islands, of which 200 are inhabited. It is a popular tourist destination for European travelers.
Jamil said the islands north of the capital were the worst hit.
