MALE, Jan 4 (HNS) - Meteorology Department has said that the first phase of installation of an Earthquake detection system has been handed over to an American company.
Director Abdullah Algeen said that by winning the bid opened outside Maldives by United Nations (UN), Enterprise Electronic Company (EEC) of United States won the work of installation of an earthquake detection system in Maldives. However details of the cost of the project were not made available.
The first phase will be funded by both United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Maldivian government.
Algeen said that EEC would start work late this month and complete the first phase in about eight months time.
During the first phase of the installation of the earthquake detection system the equipment to be installed is a toddler weather radar, two automatic stations and a short period seismic center, Meteorology Department said. From that the short period seismic center and toddler weather radar will be placed in Hulhule.
The automatic stations will be placed in Baa atoll Eydhafushi and Dhaalu atoll Kudahuvadhoo. “The survey to install the automatic station in Eyadhufushi has been completed. Kudahuvadhoo survey will start very soon. In addition to that the Northeastern side of the route from Hulhule to Hulhumale is being dug to install the toddler weather radar. When this radar is installed aircrafts will receive more weather information,” Algeen said.
He said that when the earthquake detection system in installed Maldives will be able to know about earthquakes of this region on its own.
“Now we have to cite some (foreign) source to give information about earthquakes. But after the installation of the earthquake detection system we will be able to give information on our own,” Algeen said.
