Maldives to commemorate December 26 as Unity Day

MALE, Jan 18 (HNS) -- The government on Sunday decided to commemorate the 26th of December annually as a Unity Day. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Cabinet.
Members praised the tremendous spirit of solidarity that the whole nation had displayed in the aftermath of the devastating tsunami that swept the Maldives on 26 December.
They spoke about the community spirit with which the public had responded to the urgent humanitarian crisis that had unfolded on that day.
The government decided to observe the date of the tsunami annually as a Unity Day, to strengthen and consolidate the national spirit, and to pursue national economic recovery in an inclusive and participatory manner, and as a mark of respect and remembrance for the compatriots who had lost their lives in the catastrophe.
The government also decided to restore the national flag to full mast on 26th January.
However, the Cabinet reiterated that humanitarian aid and reconstruction and recovery efforts would continue unabated and in a manner commensurate with the overwhelming need felt throughout the nation.
